Hello! It’s been a while - I wish I could say I’ve been off doing interesting things, but I really haven’t. Here’s what I’ve done:
Watch The Leftovers — a Justin Theroux show that ran on HBO from 2014-17 that about six people watched — and think of little else after finishing it. It was very much not like the regular shows I watch, in that it was constantly confusing and I never understood anything. The show kicks off three years after the ‘departure’, an event which saw two percent of the world’s population disappear with no explanation, and follows a group of people in a small town as they try to deal with the continued aftermath of the departure. It’s a really interesting exploration of grief, faith, and just batshit insanity. Nothing ever makes sense (in one scene, Justin Theroux has to sing karaoke to make it home from a sort of maybe-purgatory) but it’s fantastic. The score is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard. If you’ve watched it, or if you end up watching it, I need to know where you stand on the series finale; I think Nora was telling the truth.
Enjoy the Colorado Avalanche winning the Stanley Cup

“Franchise savior” is a cruel and overzealous label to stick on any teenage athlete, and yet it’s inevitable that almost any No. 1 overall pick—in any sport, not just hockey—will be pressured to live up to the expectations set by those terms.
+ one of my favourite NHL traditions is the conference champs refusing to touch the conference final trophy, because it’s supposedly bad luck. A few of the Avs decided to touch it, after some back and forth:

Read Liar’s Poker, the first book written by Michael Lewis, about his time as a bond salesman at Salomon Brothers in the 1980s. It was recommended to me by a colleague and, despite understanding nothing about bonds, it was a great read; it feels like it sets up or foreshadows a lot of what Lewis went on to write about in The Big Short.
